These Celebrations and Their Unnecessary Epicness, 2015, HD video, colour, stereo, 5'51", 1 of 5 edition + 2 AP
Inspired by the sudden cancellation of a major public celebration and the subsequent four-month period of societal pause, this work explores the transition from shared spectacle to private reflection. Rather than capturing a grand, collective event, Leung meticulously documents a single domestic sparkler burning down in slow motion. The piece invites the audience to examine a familiar phenomenon through a detached, almost scientific lens—observing the anatomy of a flame. In doing so, it opens up a quiet, meditative space to reflect on the psychological weight of the sublime and how our relationship to time and expectation alters during a prolonged period of stimulation.
A Cone Zone, 2015, high grade resin, (270x270x650mm) variable dimensions, set of 3
The accompanying work consists of three cones positioned on the gallery floor. Occupying the physical space, the specific distance maintained between them implies an intangible boundary within the mind of the viewer—a zone demarcated for an unspoken purpose. Leung is interested in these ubiquitous crowd-management objects as tools for both physical and mental choreography. In a subtle paradox, the cones not only dictate the external movement around them, but also permanently occupy the negative space trapped within their own form.
