Observing the Crowd Observing #3, 2016, Pencil on vellum, 210 x 297mm

This series of work explores the invisible undercurrents and psychological dynamics of the urban landscape. Rendered in delicate pencil on translucent vellum, the drawing traces the outlines of public gatherings while deliberately withholding the central event or "happening." Leung is fascinated by the unspoken magnetism of collective assembly—how the presence of a crowd instinctively transforms the casual passerby into an implicated bystander, drawn by a shared gaze whose object remains unseen. In eras of heightened civic precarity, this anonymous accumulation of bystanders triggers an immediate atmospheric shift, transforming the public square into a space charged with suspense, curiosity, and structural tension.
